REGIME — Softening data collides with a Fed still leaning to hike
Last week: Risk drifted as the July FOMC held with three hawkish dissents. This week: cooling jobs and a weaker dollar reopened the bid, and spot ETF inflows returned across both BTC and ETH.
Bitcoin closed the week near $65,227, up roughly 3% from ~$62,765 seven days earlier, its steadiest weekly gain since the late-July consolidation. The move was driven less by leverage than by returning cash-ETF demand, which tends to be stickier.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in about $626M across three trading sessions (Aug 3, 5, 7), with BlackRock's IBIT alone accounting for $479M of that, lifting IBIT's cumulative net inflows to nearly $61B. This marks the most sustained inflow momentum since late July.
The macro tape softened: a weaker-than-expected jobs print on Aug 7 pushed the dollar index down to 99.56 (a seven-week low for the euro cross) and sent gold up 2.4% to $4,343. Softer data cuts against the Fed's hawkish hold and is, at the margin, supportive for risk assets.
The tension is the Fed itself: the July FOMC held the funds rate at 3.50–3.75% for a fifth consecutive meeting, but three members dissented in favour of a 25bp hike. Markets now price one to two hikes by year-end rather than the cuts expected earlier in 2026.
Bitcoin's ratio to S&P 500 E-mini futures sits near 8.42 (BTC ~$65.2K / ES ~7,745) , still below the ~9.0 reference floor, signalling BTC continues to lag equity-adjusted risk despite the weekly bounce.
Our Take: This is a market caught between a hawkish central bank and data that keeps undercutting the hawkish case. The Fed is signalling it wants to hike; the incoming numbers. cooling CPI, a soft labour print, a falling dollar are quietly building the case for patience. Crypto has resolved that ambiguity to the upside for now, but through the narrow channel of Bitcoin ETF demand rather than broad risk appetite.
The key tension is breadth. BTC dominance holding near 60% and an Altcoin Season Index of 37 tell you this is a Bitcoin-led tape, not a market-wide melt-up. What resolves it in either direction is the next inflation read and the Fed's September decision: a soft July CPI would validate the "hikes are off the table" trade and let the bid broaden into ETH and quality alts; a hot print revives September hike risk and likely caps BTC below its equity-adjusted floor.

BTC — Cash ETF demand does the heavy lifting
Three-session net inflows of ~$626M reversed the late-July stall; no single session recorded a net outflow, and IBIT led every day.
BTC reclaimed the ~$65K area but remains well below its October 2025 all-time high of $126,080 ; this is a recovery grind, not a breakout.
The BTC/ES ratio at ~8.42 stays under the 9.0 floor, meaning Bitcoin is still cheap relative to equities on the desk's cross-asset gauge.
Dominance holding ~59.5–60% confirms capital is concentrating in BTC rather than rotating down the risk curve.
Our take: Bitcoin's week was a quality bounce: driven by institutional cash flow, not funding-fuelled leverage, which makes it more durable but also slower. The signal to watch is whether IBIT's streak extends: three green sessions is momentum, but the desk wants to see it survive the July CPI print before treating the floor as confirmed. Below the 9.0 equity-adjusted line, BTC has room to catch up if macro cooperates; the risk is a hot inflation number that snaps the ETF bid.

ETH - A quiet inflow streak nobody is talking about
ETH spot ETFs are building toward a fifth consecutive week of net inflows, with roughly $195M added through Thursday and BlackRock's ETHA the dominant source (e.g. Aug 4: +$53.1M net, ETHA +$42.5M).
ETH trades near $1,880–1,914, roughly flat to slightly firmer on the week — lagging BTC's 3% gain.
The ETH/BTC ratio at ~0.0289 broke above a multi-month descending channel in July but faces overhead resistance at 0.0316 and 0.0352.
Fresh whale wallets accumulated ~50,000 ETH this month as the ratio ticked up ~6%.
Our take: Ethereum is the coiled spring of this tape: the inflow streak and the ETH/BTC channel breakout are constructive, but price hasn't rewarded holders yet because Bitcoin is absorbing the marginal institutional dollar. If the macro bid broadens after a soft CPI, ETH is the most obvious beneficiary given its ETF momentum and improving relative ratio. Until then it grinds sideways in BTC's shadow: accumulate, don't chase.

SOL & BNB — The alt majors diverge
SOL slipped ~2.4% on the week to ~$76.57, though it has been building a technical base in the $70.6–76 range with recovering volume.
BNB firmed to ~$602.49, up ~2% and outperforming SOL, helped by exchange-token resilience during a Bitcoin-led week.
Solana faces a heavy August unlock calendar (see Alpha) that adds near-term supply overhang.
Neither has meaningfully outperformed BTC, consistent with the Bitcoin-season reading.
Our take: The SOL/BNB split captures the week's character: exchange and utility tokens with steady demand (BNB) hold up, while higher-beta L1s (SOL) chop under unlock pressure and a market unwilling to reward risk breadth. SOL's base near $73–76 is worth watching. A reclaim of the 50-day with the broader bid intact would be the first credible sign of rotation out of pure BTC concentration.

Alpha Cluster - Privacy coins and AI-agent tokens lead a narrow tape
Unibase (UB), a decentralised memory layer for AI agents, was the standout, +61% over seven days to ~$0.1943 (~$486M cap). The AI-agent narrative continues to attract speculative flow.
Privacy names bid: Zcash (ZEC) +8.2% to ~$512, Monero (XMR) +5.2% to ~$383, a recurring risk-hedge rotation when regulatory headlines dominate.
Cardano (ADA) posted strong weekly gain on renewed rotation interest; Hyperliquid (HYPE) held ~$54.74 (+3.7%).
Token unlocks are a headwind: ~$1.28B releases between Aug 3 and Sep 3, led by PROVE, ENA and HYPE in the first week, plus a linear $TRUMP unlock (~$40.9M) through August and GRASS from Aug 28.
Our take: Alpha this week was narrow and thematic rather than broad. AI-agent infrastructure and privacy, two narratives that thrive precisely when the majors are range-bound. That's a classic Bitcoin-season signature: capital hunts for idiosyncratic stories because beta isn't paying. The unlock calendar is the offsetting risk; roughly $1.28B of new supply over a month is enough to cap rallies in the affected names, so selectivity matters more than usual.
Rails - More stablecoin rules, still no global alignment
The CLARITY Act continues through the US legislative process, aiming to draw a cleaner SEC/CFTC jurisdictional line for digital assets, the single most consequential structural item for institutional participants.
Stablecoin architecture is maturing but fragmenting: the 2025 GENIUS Act framework is rolling out in the US, MiCA is fully live in the EU, and Hong Kong and the UAE have their own stablecoin ordinances with materially different definitions of issuance and backing.
Moody's published a stablecoin rating methodology, giving institutions a familiar lens on issuer risk, a quiet but real step toward treasury-desk adoption.
Nasdaq's SEC-approved framework for tokenised stocks and ETFs (settling through the DTC) anticipates first trades in 2026; the SEC's Jan 28 taxonomy of tokenised securities gives the market a shared vocabulary.
Our take: The regulatory story for institutional custody and payments is no longer "will rules come" but "which jurisdiction's rules apply" and the answer differs by centre. For a multi-licensed custodian operating across HK, Singapore and the UAE, the fragmentation is both a compliance burden and a moat: the ability to operate cleanly under several regimes at once is exactly what fragmented rules make scarce. Nasdaq's tokenised-securities move and the DTC settlement rail are the developments to track, they signal tokenisation crossing from pilot into market plumbing.
Outlook - The July CPI print is the whole ballgame
July CPI (release mid-August) is the binary: a soft print validates the "no September hike" trade and lets the bid broaden into ETH and quality alts; a hot print revives hike risk and likely caps BTC below its ~9.0 equity-adjusted floor.
The September FOMC (with July and August CPI in hand) is where the three-dissent hawkish minority either gains or loses the argument. Watch Jackson Hole (late August) for the Fed's tone-setting.
ETF flow follow-through is the cleanest crypto-native tell: extension of IBIT's inflow streak and a confirmed fifth week of ETH inflows would mark the floor as institutional, not tactical.
BTC technical levels: hold above ~$62–63K keeps the recovery intact; the ~9.0 BTC/ES line is the cross-asset ceiling to reclaim. Alt breadth trigger: an Altcoin Season Index move above ~50 would be the first real rotation signal.
Supply watch: ~$1.28B of unlocks through Sep 3 (GRASS from Aug 28, ongoing $TRUMP) keeps a lid on affected alts.
Our take: The set-up into the back half of August is a data-dependent coin flip framed by a hawkish Fed that the data keeps undercutting. The path of least resistance is a continued BTC grind higher on ETF demand, with ETH as the leveraged beneficiary if, and only if, the July CPI print gives the Fed room to stand pat. The risk case is symmetric and sharp: a hot inflation number reprices September hike odds, snaps the ETF bid, and sends dominance back toward 60%+ as capital retreats to Bitcoin.
Positioning guidance is selective, not directional: favour BTC and ETF-backed exposure as the core, treat ETH as the highest-conviction rotation candidate on a soft CPI, and keep alt exposure idiosyncratic (AI-agent, privacy) rather than broad-beta while the unlock calendar and Bitcoin-season readings persist. This is a market to accumulate quality into, not to chase breadth in.
